Ayurvedic massage and its benefits
When performed regularly, this practice originating in India strengthens the person physically,
mentally and emotionally so that they can experience a state of
psychophysical well-being. Well-being is therefore the balance of every part of ourselves. Health problems
manifest themselves when we do not respect our true nature; it also entails
numerous physical benefits and for millennia it has been used to treat all kinds of ailments of
body, mind and spirit.
A THERAPEUTIC SERVICE:
Touch is medicine: the simple act of touching another person is in itself highly
therapeutic. It is a tool that restores to us that tactile experience that we feel as a great
need on an affective level.
DETOXIFYING:
In massage, the movement techniques handed down for millennia help the body to
eliminate toxins (ama in Ayurveda) increasing the immune defenses.
DIGESTIVE DISORDERS:
It improves the action of the colon, strengthening the muscles of the intestine and abdomen, and
alleviating constipation. It promotes the flow of gastric juices and helps the body to
absorb food after digestion.
KIDNEY PROBLEMS:
Kidney functions can be improved by facilitating the elimination of waste and toxins
and reducing water retention.
REPRODUCTIVE PROBLEMS:
Abdominal and back massage help in the treatment of menstrual cramps,
irregular cycles, premenstrual stress and menopausal symptoms, and for men they relax and
reduce inflammation of the bladder and prostate.
RESPIRATORY DISORDERS:
If performed regularly, Abhyanga promotes lung activity, contributing to a
slower and deeper breathing. Some movements can help expel mucus
from the bronchi. LYMPHATIC PROBLEMS:
Since massage stimulates lymphatic circulation, toxins will be eliminated more
effectively.
Swelling due to bruises can also be reduced, preventing the formation of
adhesions (which form from the fluid of the swelling when it is not absorbed, but
becomes viscous and adheres to the surrounding tissues, limiting movement in the
affected joint).
CIRCULATORY DISORDERS:
It relieves pressure on blood vessels, accelerating blood flow: this stimulates
circulation and strengthens the heartbeat. It can therefore be useful in treating heart
problems and in reducing blood pressure and heart rate.
MUSCLE PROBLEMS:
Depending on the needs, movements that stretch and relax the muscles relieve
cramps and physical tension, help remove scars and contribute to the elimination of
toxins. Producing contraction in the muscles through massage is
toning: the stiffness resulting from excessive physical activity can be relieved with
movements that alternately relax and contract the muscle.
BONE PROBLEMS:
The bones are not directly affected by massage, but they benefit indirectly. The
improvement in blood and lymphatic circulation leads to more effective
nourishment for the bones. Massage provides relief from the most painful joint
disorders such as arthritis.
SKIN PROBLEMS:
It stimulates the skin glands, improving its texture, tone and condition.
PREVENTION:
Despite its many healing properties, massage is generally preferred as a
preventive treatment; it can significantly improve both general health and
psychological well-being.
